IEEE Draft Guide for Evaluating Stator Cores of AC Electric Machines Rated 1 MVA and Higher

Abstract

This guide describes methods which may be used to evaluate the condition of stator cores of AC electric machines including generators, motors, and synchronous condensers, and summarizes background information relevant for the informed application of these methods.

Scope

This guide describes methods which may be used to evaluate the condition of stator cores of AC electric machines including generators, motors, and synchronous condensers, and summarizes background information relevant for the informed application of these methods. This guide is not intended to provide detailed inspection, testing, and maintenance procedures. Other IEEE standards and references related to stator core evaluations and repairs are listed in Clause 2, "Normative References". The methods outlined herein are generally applicable to machines rated 1 MVA (1340 HP) and higher. However, these methods may be applicable to units of lower rating.

Purpose

The purpose of this guide is to provide assistance to engineering and maintenance personnel responsible for planning, performing, and assessing results of stator core evaluations. The results of a successful evaluation program may be used to: 1. Identify needed maintenance and repairs. 2. Support strategic decisions relative to core replacement. 3. Provide guidance for developing purchase specifications. 4. Help to optimize the core life from an asset management perspective.
