An example in sizing a series compensation scheme with fixed and variable capacitors
FACTS technology is slowly finding its way in the electric power industry. Although many FACTS controllers have been defined, some might never materialize, others are finding their place, and new ones will surely appear for specific, applications. This paper gives an example of a methodology to size a series compensation scheme comprised of a fixed capacitance and a thyristor-controlled series compensation (TCSC). A base case for the. 2004 winter peak demand in Mexico is used as reference. New generation is added in that year, but a new modified case base is formed, assuming no new lines are built to account for the added generation. Henceforth, the existing lines will have an increased power transfer, so studies are needed to design a compensation scheme that will carry this new loading.
