The Effectiveness of Gamified Applications for Communicating Complex Bureaucratic Topics

This study focuses on investigating the effectiveness of game-based applications in the context of acquiring knowledge about bureaucratic procedures and insurances. It also examines whether these applications can contribute to increasing interest in bureaucratic topics among young people. Therefore, an experiment was conducted with 15 students and trainees using the digital life simulation “LifeLines” from MSG Systems AG. The test subjects were randomly divided into two groups: One group was given the task of acquiring knowledge about specific insurance policies and bureaucratic procedures via internet research, while the other group was asked to use the “LifeLines” application for the same purpose. Knowledge tests on the covered topics were then used to evaluate which approach achieved greater learning success. The results showed that the game-based approach of LifeLines led to more favorable learning outcomes, and that the test subjects enjoyed this approach more than conventional internet research.
