Biography
Edmund Kuffel (SM'69–F'89–LF'97) is a native of Poland. He received the B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees from University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, and the D.Sc. degree from The University of Manchester, Manchester, U.K.
From 1954 to 1960, he was a Research Engineer with the Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Company, Manchester. From 1960 to 1968, he was with the faculty of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, Manchester, in the ranks Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Reader. From 1968 to 1970, he was a Professor of electrical engineering with the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, where he was the Dean of Engineering from 1978 to 1989 and is currently a Dean Emeritus of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. From 1970 to 1978, he was the Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Windsor, Canada. He has authored/coauthored four textbooks, three in high-voltage engineering, and published over 250 papers in technical journals and international conference proceedings.
Dr. Kuffel has served on numerous committees dealing with engineering education and research in high-voltage engineering. He is an elected fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (1987) for his leadership in engineering education and contribution to the economic development of Canada. He was the recipient of the IEEE Centennial Medal (1984) for his outstanding contributions to high-voltage and gaseous insulation.
